Cities can only become cities if such places are blessed with a cathedral, always the biggest and grandest building in the area, or so we were always led to believe, but it is a well and truly wrong assumption. To prove the error Birmingham became a city in 1889 and they never built a cathedral there, probably because there wasn’t enough room what with all those motorways surrounding the place, more canals dotted around than Venice could ever boast, an amazing fact, along with more football stadiums than any other place outside of London, even if most of them played in the lower leagues.
