Chapter 29 - Harry Wragg - Fag


They never sold fags here when I was a Saturday boy

Harry was a successful jockey born in 1902 who won The Derby three times. In 1936 Gallahers cigarette company produced the first collection of cigarette cards inside the packets depicting jockeys and it didn’t take too long for people to realise Harry Wragg rhymed with fag.

Most working-class members of The East End had never been near a racecourse in their lives as there wasn’t such a thing nearby, and betting shops didn’t exist either, just bookies on street corners, so it was a strange adoption, yet it happened just the same.
